Educational leaders in Fiji are being called to focus on reintegrating moral and religious values as fundamental principles in the nation’s education system. Professor Jito Vanualailai, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific, emphasizes that the historical foundation of Fiji’s schools by religious groups laid down principles of good character and values.
He argues that while academic advancements are necessary, they should not overshadow the need for a solid moral foundation which is essential in shaping students’ character and purpose. Professor Vanualailai cautions that failing to champion ethical and spiritual principles within education may lead to a generation of graduates lacking integrity and purpose, ultimately jeopardizing the moral compass of society.
Citing alarming increases in youth crime, drug abuse, and public health issues, he poses a critical question about the future that society wishes to cultivate. He advocates for school principals to identify shared values among diverse religions to guide students in their moral development. Importantly, Professor Vanualailai clarifies that this movement is not a mere return to the past, but rather an endeavor to learn from historical practices and integrate their beneficial aspects into contemporary education.
This call reflects ongoing discussions about the necessity of moral education in Fijian schools, as previously highlighted during the National Faith Leaders Dialogue on Reconciliation. There, leaders from various faith backgrounds stressed the crucial role that schools play in nurturing responsible and well-rounded citizens, emphasizing the importance of starting moral education at the grassroots level.
Govind Singh, president of the School Management Association of Fiji, also addressed similar issues, advocating for a moral awakening in schools and the involvement of community and parents in reinforcing these values. With collective strength and commitment, there is optimism that Fiji can reinforce its educational framework to better support children, creating a nurturing environment where future generations can thrive and positively contribute to society.
This aligns with a growing consensus that addressing the educational challenges with a focus on moral integrity can pave the way for enhanced community engagement and improved outcomes for students.
