Ratu Simione College, based in Namosi, is on the precipice of making history in its young rugby program. Founded just five years ago, the college has reached the under-19 semi-finals of the Southern Zone Dean’s competition for the first time, setting up a thrilling match against Assemblies of God High School (AOG) this weekend.
Southern Zone president Rusiate Wadali expressed excitement about the upcoming clash, noting, “Ratu Simione are the new kids on the block. This is their first time making the semi-finals.” He highlighted the history of AOG as a seasoned competitor in the competition, albeit one that has seen better years, stating, “Assemblies Of God is one of the older names in the competition but has been away from the top for some years.”
The stakes are high, as the winner of this match will move on to the national play-offs. In addition to the U19 semi-final, the division will also feature other exciting matches, such as Nasinu Secondary facing Naitasiri Secondary. The match outcomes will determine which teams progress to the Southern Zone final — with both winners and losers playing again the following week to secure qualifying spots for the national competition.
The semi-finals will encompass various age categories. In the U18 grade, Nabua Secondary is set to challenge Marist Brothers High School, while Suva Grammar will take on Nasinu Secondary. The U17 and U16 divisions will see several match-ups, including MBHS against Ratu Sukuna Memorial School and Suva Grammar squaring off against Nasinu Secondary.
Wadali expressed gratitude that inclement weather has not impacted the season thus far and encouraged families, former students, and supporters to rally behind their teams in what promises to be a pivotal weekend.
Ratu Simione College’s journey highlights the spirit of competition and the emergence of new talent, showcasing how fresh teams can shake up established norms in sports. This not only inspires their local community but also engages spectators in a celebration of youth rugby.
