The psychiatric evaluation for 25-year-old Charles Laxton Sundar, who is accused of murdering and dismembering his 86-year-old grandfather in Lutu, Wainibuka, remains unfinished. This case has drawn considerable attention since the tragic incident unfolded on July 12, 2025, when it is alleged that Sundar took the life of Emori Rokovuki by slitting his throat and subsequently dismembering the body with knives.
During a hearing at the High Court in Suva yesterday, presided over by Justice Usaia Ratuvili, it was revealed that the court has been awaiting the psychiatric report since November 2025. This document is crucial for determining Sundar’s fitness to enter a plea regarding the serious murder charge he faces.
State prosecutor Pream Ram stated that a follow-up would be conducted to provide updates on the next court proceedings. Meanwhile, Sundar remains in custody as the legal process continues, with the case rescheduled for February 24.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges within the judicial system, particularly regarding mental health evaluations in criminal cases. The delay in producing the psychiatric report not only affects the current proceedings but also raises broader questions about ensuring timely access to mental health resources for those entangled in serious legal matters.
