The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has instructed the Police Prosecution to forward Sailosi Raikaci’s case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). Raikaci, a 24-year-old police constable and the son of Assistant Police Commissioner Crime, Sakeo Raikaci, appeared for his initial hearing before Resident Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi, facing a charge of theft.

It is alleged that Raikaci stole a minibus valued at $65,000 from the Nausori minibus stand on the evening of Tuesday. Magistrate Vaniqi chose to transfer the case due to a potential conflict of interest, given that ACP Raikaci is the superior of Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shelveen Sharma.

Sergeant Sharma had no objections to Raikaci being granted bail but suggested stringent conditions, including the requirement for Raikaci to provide one surety, surrender his travel documents, report to the Nausori Police Station twice a week, adhere to a stop departure order, and refrain from engaging with state witnesses.

Raikaci’s lawyer, Isoa Matanitobua, submitted two sureties, of which only Raikaci’s mother, Naomi Raikaci, a principal lawyer at the firm, was accepted. The court dismissed the other surety as the individual was merely an employee of the law firm.

Stationed at the Nabua Police Station, Raikaci will be required to report to the Nausori Police Station, which is designated as his official residence. Sergeant Sharma informed the court that the first phase of disclosures had been made, but an additional 21 days would be needed to transcribe recordings to be shared with the defense.

The case has been postponed until January 13, 2025.

This situation brings attention to the importance of justice and transparency within the law enforcement community. While it is disheartening to see a police officer involved in such serious allegations, it also illustrates the legal system’s commitment to handling cases impartially, regardless of the individuals involved. As this case unfolds, it offers an opportunity for reflection and reform within law enforcement practices, emphasizing accountability among officers.
