Payment Delays: Parents Left in Limbo Over Back-to-School Support

The Ministry of Education has issued clarifications regarding the delays faced by some parents in receiving the $200 Back-to-School Support payment. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro noted that issues stemming from incorrect information in submitted applications have resulted in difficulties for families as they prepare for the school year.

Minister Radrodro emphasized that many of the challenges are due to inaccuracies such as incorrect FEMIS ID numbers, Birth Registration Numbers, mobile numbers, and payment methods (including TMO, MPaisa/MyCash). Additionally, he identified breaches of confidentiality related to third-party inquiries and late submissions from certain schools as contributors to these delays.

To alleviate these issues, parents and guardians are reminded that application forms should be accurately filled out at their respective schools and verified by the Head of School before the December 13, 2024, deadline. This process is especially critical for students enrolling in Year 12 who must submit their applications in a timely manner in order for them to be processed promptly at the start of the academic year for 2025.

Previously, it was reported that the government has processed over 208,000 applications with around 200,000 payments disbursed, reflecting a significant government investment aimed at easing the financial burden for families with incomes below $50,000. This initiative has an annual budget of approximately $130 million, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting families in managing educational expenses.

While frustrations from parents regarding payment delays have been voiced, the Ministry remains proactive in addressing these issues. By enhancing the application processes and ensuring community collaboration among schools, parents, and the Ministry, there is optimism that families will receive the necessary support as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

This situation, while presenting challenges, also highlights the importance of accurate information and community engagement in supporting educational journeys. Overall, the dedicated efforts of the Ministry and its collaborative approach provide hope that all families will soon benefit from this critical support as they gear up for a successful academic year ahead.
