FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure over the Fiji group, combined with a moist east to southeast wind flow, will bring periods of rain and scattered thunderstorms to northern and eastern areas through to later tomorrow. Showers and isolated heavy falls are expected in several provinces and island groups, while most other districts will see partly cloudy conditions with brief afternoon or evening showers.

Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely for Sigatoka–Korolevu, Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra and Rakiraki, as well as the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Taveuni, nearby smaller islands, and parts of northern Vanua Levu (Southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces) will see cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, though showers there should become more occasional later today. Elsewhere, areas such as Nadi, Lautoka, Ba and inland western districts are expected to be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers, but thunderstorms with heavy falls remain possible during the late afternoon or evening.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, particularly where storms become intense. People in vulnerable locations should be aware of the potential for rapid rises in rivers and surface flooding during heavy downpours. Those planning travel on smaller roads or to coastal areas should allow for slower journeys and reduced visibility during heavier showers and storms.

Moderate east to southeast winds will continue, strengthening to moderate to fresh southeasterly from tomorrow. Seas are currently moderate and are forecast to become moderate to rough, which may affect small craft and exposed coastal waters. Rotuma remains under an easterly flow and should be mostly fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas.

Looking ahead to Saturday, many of the same northern and eastern areas — including Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu, Cakaudrove and southern Bua provinces, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti — can expect cloudy periods with some showers. Elsewhere the country should be mainly fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures for lowland areas are broadly in the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, with many centres reporting minimums around 23°C and daytime highs between 30°C and 32°C.
