Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, is advocating for enhanced and practical partnerships during a high-level defence meeting in Japan aimed at stabilising the increasingly competitive Indo-Pacific region. In an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun, Tikoduadua emphasized Japan’s vital role in supporting the priorities of Pacific nations, particularly in light of growing influences from major powers such as China, which he believes could lead to fragmentation within the Indo-Pacific.
He described Japan’s potential to act as a stabilising force by maintaining consistency, practicality, and respect for Pacific leadership. The minister highlighted the importance of Japan’s ongoing support in key areas, including maritime safety and enforcement, disaster response readiness, and strengthening regional institutions.
Tikoduadua’s address comes as he participates in the Japan Pacific Islands Defense Dialogue (JPIDD) in Tokyo, which commenced on Sunday and is set to conclude on Tuesday. Fiji is pushing for results-driven discussions, focusing on vital issues such as maritime security cooperation, disaster response, and information sharing.
Expressing a desire for practical outcomes, Tikoduadua stated, “I want practical discussions that improve outcomes on the water and in communities.” He pointed out Fiji’s eagerness to enhance collaboration in maritime data aggregation and disaster relief coordination, underlining the importance of lasting regional stability that is rooted in mutual respect and driven by Pacific-led priorities.
This commitment to cooperative engagement reflects a hopeful and proactive approach towards a stable and secure Indo-Pacific, suggesting that through collaboration, nations in the region can navigate the challenges posed by shifting geopolitical dynamics.
