Beyond the headline

A weak trough of low pressure and a moist easterly wind flow are producing cloudy spells and showers across the northern and eastern islands, with rain expected to spread from the west into the rest of the group from later tomorrow. While some areas will remain mainly fine, pockets of heavier rain and isolated thunderstorms are likely over the larger islands through the next day or two.

Cloudy periods with showers are forecast today for Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Cikobia and nearby smaller islands, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu and nearby isles. Most other places will be fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers, but Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are at risk of thunderstorms with heavy falls. Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

Rain is expected to develop from the west and spread across the group from later tomorrow as another trough approaches. Winds are moderate to fresh from the east today, becoming northerly from later tomorrow. Seas are expected to be moderate to rough through the period.

The outlook for Monday is for occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls over most places, with rain gradually clearing from the west later in the day. Winds will be moderate to fresh northerly, turning and becoming southwesterly later in the day, and seas are likely to remain moderate to rough. The risk of localised heavy falls and flash flooding will continue, particularly where thunderstorms occur.

Town forecasts indicate warm conditions with showers or thunderstorms possible. Navua/Suva/Nausori are expecting a minimum of 23°C and maximum around 30°C, with thunderstorms and rain developing later. Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and Tavua/Rakiraki show similar temperatures, with daytime maxima near 31–32°C and rain spreading from tomorrow. Labasa, Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu are also likely to see showers or thunderstorms developing, generally with minimums near 23°C and daytime highs around 30–31°C. Rotuma will remain mostly fine apart from brief showers, with a minimum near 25°C and a maximum around 32°C, easing to brief showers on Monday.
