A pair of troughs is setting up a wet spell across Fiji today, with cloud and showers already affecting the northern and eastern islands and a second trough approaching from the west. The incoming system will draw a moist northerly flow over the group from later today, bringing rain that will spread from the west and periods of heavy falls in several areas.
Most places can expect cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms through tonight. Rain is expected to develop from the western islands and spread eastward, with afternoon or evening thunderstorms producing heavy falls particularly over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Localised heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, so communities in those locations should be alert to rapidly rising water and poor road conditions.
Winds will be moderate northeasterly early, turning northerly from later today. Seas are forecast to be moderate to rough through tonight, so coastal communities and small craft operators should take note of the deteriorating marine conditions. On Monday, the outlook is for occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with continuing risk of heavy falls, with winds becoming moderate to fresh northerly and then gradually shifting southwesterly later in the day; seas are expected to remain moderate to rough.
Across the main centres: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see cloudy periods with showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with temperatures around 23 to 30°C and rain increasing from later today. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, and Tavua/Rakiraki are forecast similar conditions with daytime highs around 31–32°C. Labasa will be mainly fine until afternoon or evening when showers and thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely, before rain develops more widely. Yasawa/Mamanuca, Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu should expect showers with rain developing or easing at various times and daytime temperatures generally in the low 30s or around 30°C.
Rotuma remains under an easterly wind flow and is expected to be fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas. The general outlook through Monday is for rain to gradually clear from the west later in the day, but the potential for localised heavy falls and flash flooding will persist across many areas until the troughs move away.
