The Vice-Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University, Dr. Transform Aqorau, has expressed serious concerns about the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, emphasizing that it could have significant repercussions for Pacific Island countries. In a statement shared via social media, Dr. Aqorau described the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East as deeply alarming, highlighting the devastation, including missile attacks and civilian casualties.

Dr. Aqorau emphasized that conflict often blinds leaders to the harsh realities faced by ordinary people. He pointed out that while some leaders may proclaim military successes, the true cost of war is borne by those not involved in decision-making. According to him, the Pacific region will not be immune to the fallout, particularly if oil supplies from the Gulf are disrupted. He warned that this disruption could lead to skyrocketing global fuel prices, which would have dire consequences for Pacific Island nations reliant on imported fuel. This could manifest in escalating electricity costs, increased transport expenses, and higher food prices, exacerbating the already precarious economic conditions in the region.

Adding to the complexity, Dr. Aqorau highlighted that the Pacific is already grappling with numerous challenges, such as climate change, rising sea levels, drug issues, mental health concerns, youth unemployment, diabetes, and sluggish economic growth. He argued that the last thing the region needs is further global instability, urging for peace instead.

Emphasizing the Pacific’s longstanding identity as an “Ocean of Peace,” Dr. Aqorau reiterated leaders’ commitment to unity, sovereignty, dialogue, and non-militarization. He remarked that this stance is more than symbolic; it is a strategic approach based on the historical awareness of the devastation caused by global power rivalries.

He further called for regional solidarity as tensions escalate globally, advocating for the Pacific nations to focus on cooperation and solidarity for their collective security. Dr. Aqorau underscored that true security should stem from development, climate resilience, and the well-being of people rather than militarization.

Wrapping up his statements, he cautioned that war diverts crucial resources that should be directed toward essential services such as education and healthcare. He urged leaders and citizens alike to uphold peace for the sake of future generations. In a world increasingly leaning towards conflict, Dr. Aqorau called for a conscious choice for stability, cooperation, and peace.
