Fiji’s Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has issued a serious warning to seasonal workers regarding potential legal consequences that could jeopardize their overseas employment opportunities. He emphasized that any criminal conviction could result in termination of their work contracts abroad.
The Minister’s warning follows an incident involving three seasonal workers from Tavea Island, Bua, who were charged with being drunk and disorderly while on an inter-island vessel on Christmas Day. A witness reported feeling afraid due to the disruptive behavior of these workers, highlighting the serious implications of such actions.
Under current policies established by the governments of New Zealand and Australia, a criminal conviction automatically disqualifies individuals from future work opportunities overseas, even if they attempt to reapply. “Any conviction will prevent them from getting hired again,” Mr. Singh stated, stressing the importance for workers to disclose any past offenses when applying for seasonal work.
He noted that not only violent or drunken behavior can lead to disqualification but also lesser offenses such as traffic violations. “Even minor offenses from a teenage years can hinder employment opportunities,” he clarified.
The Minister is coordinating with the Ministry of Justice and the High Commissioners of New Zealand and Australia to address these issues more effectively. This reaction points to a broader commitment to ensuring the well-being and compliance of Fijian workers abroad, amidst ongoing concerns related to worker treatment, as highlighted by previous incidents involving seasonal workers.
This situation serves as a reminder for all prospective overseas workers to adhere to the law and maintain a clean record to secure their employment opportunities. In a positive light, fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability among seasonal workers may lead to better job prospects and working conditions in the future.
In summary, seasonal workers must be aware that their actions can have significant implications for their employment abroad. It is essential for them to stay informed and compliant with legal standards to enjoy successful overseas assignments.
