A baby’s first cry welcomed the New Year at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, a moment that filled hearts with joy and optimism. Rosi Saroni brought her daughter, Kesaiya Gerua, into the world at 3:54 AM, with the baby weighing a healthy 3.65 kilograms. Originally from Tovu Totoya in Lau and now residing in Kalekana, Lami, Saroni expressed that holding her baby for the first time was a moment she will cherish forever. Her family is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to meet their newest member.
“I’m feeling good, holding my baby in my arms. I’m so happy and overwhelmed with joy to be holding my daughter, and I’m happy that my firstborn is a New Year baby. This is a blessing for me,” Saroni shared.
For the staff at CWM Hospital, the early hours of January 1 hold special significance. Midwife Ivamere Nadave described assisting new mothers and their babies as not just a job, but a privilege. She noted that around five babies made their entrance at the hospital during the early moments of the New Year, each bringing its own story of hope and new beginnings.
“This is our calling; this is our passion—to deliver babies and take care of them from pregnancy through to delivery,” said Nadave. She emphasized the importance of young mothers prioritizing their health during pregnancy and commended her team for their dedication during the holiday season. The sight of families welcoming new life against the backdrop of the New Year makes the long hours rewarding, she added.
“Eat the right food, attend clinics early, and come for bookings as soon as you find out you’re pregnant,” Nadave urged when advising expectant mothers.
Adding to the warmth of the occasion, the Nappy Time team from CJ Patel delivered gift baskets filled with baby essentials to the mothers, offering smiles and support that reassured them they are not alone as they navigate the early days of parenthood. This gesture highlights the community’s collective spirit in celebrating new beginnings and supporting families during their joyous transitions.
