Fiji Netball Under Pressure: A Call for Change from Within

Netball Fiji in Crisis: Calls for Change Amid Leadership Turmoil

Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, has raised significant concerns about the lack of support Netball Fiji is providing to its affiliated associations. Her comments follow a motion of no confidence signed by 15 presidents of netball associations across Fiji, who believe that Netball Fiji has not been adequately addressing their needs, particularly concerning developmental initiatives.

Highlighting the dissatisfaction among major associations in the western region, such as Lautoka and Nadi, Vosararawa-Sachs noted, “It is concerning that leadership at Netball Fiji has not prioritized their interests.” During the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), she and many others felt a significant absence of transparency in the operations of Netball Fiji.

This situation underscores ongoing issues surrounding governance and accountability within the organization, a topic that has been a point of contention among various association leaders. Previous discussions have highlighted concerns such as nepotism, national team performance, and overall management practices.

In response to the criticisms, Netball Fiji has committed to addressing these concerns and ensuring fair governance. They have expressed intentions to uphold transparency and manage processes related to the upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM) in a fair manner.

Amid these challenges, there is a cautiously optimistic view among stakeholders regarding the potential for revitalization in the sport. Enhancements to local competitions, improved player pathways, and a focus on grassroots development could lead to meaningful advancements. As the netball community in Fiji pushes for reform, leaders are advocating for changes that could increase participation and foster a stronger netball culture in the region.

This period could serve as a pivotal moment for Fiji’s netball scene, presenting an opportunity for positive transformation if leadership is responsive to the community’s demands and committed to enacting necessary reforms.
