Moala, a serene island in Lau, is emerging as a promising new destination for game-fishing, presenting an exciting opportunity for adventurous visitors. During a recent visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka, the potential for future tourism in Lau was prominently discussed.

Mr. Gavoka, accompanied by United Nations Resident Coordinator Dirk Wagener, explored various islands including Moala, Fulaga, Lakeba, Cicia, and Vanuabalavu to evaluate their tourism capabilities and infrastructure requirements. These inspections are part of initial discussions aimed at developing a master tourism plan for the Lau Group, which encompasses the Bay of Islands near Fulaga.

The recognition of Fulaga has recently surged due to the Camakau Canoe Regatta, positioning it on the tourism radar. Although islands like Fulaga currently lack an airstrip, alternative strategies are being explored to enhance sea access for cruise liners and super yachts, making them more attainable for international travelers.

Daku Niulevu, the Mata ni Tikina for Moala, expressed gratitude for the government’s attention to their island’s tourism potential. He emphasized the hope that this initiative could lead to new opportunities for the youth of Moala, enabling them to harness the island’s resources and skills for sustainable growth.

With game-fishing being a popular pursuit in Fiji, Moala’s waters hold immense appeal for fishing enthusiasts, potentially setting the stage for an inviting blend of adventure and natural beauty. This initiative not only aims to boost tourism but also to foster community development and empowerment, enhancing the lives of those in the Lau region.
