The Miss Fiji Pageant committee has refuted allegations of bullying and colorism made by Miss Fiji, Dr. Peggy Ravusiro. Pageant director Ana Tuiketei-Bolabiu addressed these claims, emphasizing that there were no formal complaints regarding mistreatment of contestants throughout the event.
Dr. Ravusiro accused Ms. Tuiketei-Bolabiu of suggesting she should “lose more weight” and claimed that some committee members made disparaging comments regarding her ethnicity. In response, Ms. Tuiketei-Bolabiu firmly denied suggesting any weight loss and stated that the pageant promotes an inclusive approach to fitness. She highlighted the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing alongside physical fitness, pointing out that contestants face significant pressure and stress during the competition.
Furthermore, Ms. Tuiketei-Bolabiu noted that contestants are encouraged to provide feedback, yet no issues concerning bullying or discrimination were raised. She dismissed the alleged ethnic remarks, reiterating that participation in the Miss Fiji Pageant is exclusive to Fijian citizens, promoting an environment free from such comments.
Highlighting the pageant’s commitment to diversity, Ms. Tuiketei-Bolabiu mentioned that Miss Fiji Ailava Samuels herself represents a blend of Samoan and Fijian heritage. She extended an invitation to Dr. Ravusiro and her supporters to discuss the matter further, reiterating that her involvement in the pageant is voluntary and stating the committee’s dedication to supporting Team Fiji at the upcoming Miss Pacific Island Pageant in 2026.
This incident underscores the challenges faced in beauty pageants, particularly regarding perceptions of body image and diversity. It also reflects a broader dialogue about inclusivity and representation in competitions, making the organizers’ responses crucial in shaping a positive and supportive atmosphere for all contestants involved.
