All aged-care homes in Fiji are currently at full capacity, as confirmed by Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran. According to her, there are no available rooms in any of the existing aged-care facilities across the country.
To tackle the overwhelming demand, the Government is actively partnering with various organizations to expand available spaces. One notable initiative is collaboration with St Vincent Home to construct additional rooms. Other partnerships include efforts with Koroipita and additional entities focused on enhancing the care infrastructure.
While the expansion of facilities addresses immediate needs, Kiran emphasized the importance of exploring long-term solutions beyond traditional residential homes. A significant focus is being placed on community-based care models, which would enable elderly individuals to remain within their communities while receiving essential support.
The Minister suggested that utilizing village facilities or community homes could provide care for older citizens while fostering their engagement with community life. To inform the development of these new care approaches, the Government is conducting nationwide consultations to gather insights and perspectives.
This proactive approach indicates a commitment to finding sustainable solutions for aged care in Fiji, potentially reshaping how support is provided to elderly individuals, ensuring they are cared for in a manner that respects their connection to their communities.
