Two men have been sentenced to three years in prison for the manslaughter of a 33-year-old man, Savinesh Kumar, in an incident that occurred in 2024. Abdul Imraan, aged 26, and Zahid Hassan, 30, will each serve one year in prison, with an additional two years suspended for three years. Having already spent one and a half months in remand, their effective custodial time remaining is ten and a half months.
Both men entered guilty pleas to the charge of manslaughter after consulting their legal representatives. The court revealed that the fatal incident took place on April 7, 2024, when Kumar was leaving a nightclub in Suva along with two others. As they exited, Imraan confronted Kumar, accusing him of inappropriate behavior towards his girlfriend, who was present in the vicinity. Tensions escalated rapidly when Imraan punched Kumar, who staggered but remained standing.
The altercation intensified further when Hassan struck Kumar, resulting in him falling backward and suffering a fatal head injury after hitting the cement footpath. Despite attempts by bystanders to provide assistance and revive Kumar, their efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful. A postmortem examination indicated that Kumar died from bilateral pulmonary emboli due to immobilization and severe traumatic head injuries.
Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, in her ruling, emphasized the senselessness of the attack, reinforcing the notion that life is sacred and every individual’s existence is invaluable. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of valuing human life.
