A concerning online scam has emerged involving a Fijian woman whose images and identity were misappropriated by local men to defraud individuals overseas, notably targeting members of the British military and professional rugby players. This alarming situation came to light when the woman reported a fraudulent Facebook account named “Tita Kuini” to the Online Safety Commission.
The fake account managed to gather a following of 215 friends and posted 23 times, leveraging her pictures to create long-term online relationships with unsuspecting men, persuading them to send significant amounts of money. In certain instances, the scammers demanded funds in exchange for explicit photos, leading to strain in personal relationships and marriages.
The case gained further notoriety when the wife of one victim contacted the woman, mistakenly believing she was in communication with her husband. This revelation prompted the woman to understand the extent of the deception, as men were misrepresenting their identities for financial gain.
In her plea for awareness, the woman advised men to carefully verify online profiles and to inform friends about any suspicious behavior. She particularly encouraged married men to be mindful of their online interactions to prevent infidelity.
Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale has acknowledged the reports of individuals allegedly operating fake social media profiles that exploit the identities and images of young women to target Fijian men abroad. He classified these incidents as romance scams intertwined with sextortion and image-based abuse.
Batiwale mentioned that such schemes typically exploit Fijians living or working overseas who are perceived to have a higher financial capacity. He emphasized that many victims might hesitate to report their experiences due to feelings of embarrassment or fear.
In cases where serious criminal activities are detected, the Online Safety Commission collaborates with the Fiji Police Force, including the CID Division and the Cybercrime Unit, to investigate and pursue potential prosecutions. This scam highlights the importance of online vigilance and the need for individuals to proactively protect themselves against deception in the digital space.
