Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, has robustly denied allegations regarding his engagement with the Mataqali Nabukebuke over the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) mining activities. Mr. Vosarogo countered claims of neglect, asserting that he has actively interacted with landowners to grasp their concerns.

In his defense, he stated, “I have met with Mataqali Nabukebuke, and from that meeting, understood the depth of their concerns.” He emphasized that his aim is to balance these concerns with the need for economic development in the mineral sector, the potential for job creation through NJV, and the socio-economic implications of the mining rights issuance.

To ensure a thorough discussion, Mr. Vosarogo has chosen to wait for the return of Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Namosi. He addressed misinformation head-on, asserting, “It is not that I have not met with the landowners at all. That is factually incorrect and poor reporting.” He highlighted his prior meetings at the Namosi Provincial Council Office and his review of numerous letters of objection submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources.

The minister also took issue with LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva, accusing him of being influenced by external activist agendas rather than adhering to local protocols. He stated that government consultations are conducted following recognized iTaukei and vanua structures, contrasting the current administration’s approach with that of the previous government, which he claims failed to provide landowners with adequate consultation opportunities.

Mr. Vosarogo reiterated his commitment to ensuring respectful and comprehensive dialogues, aiming to harmonize development initiatives with landowners’ interests.

This situation illustrates the importance of effective communication and consultation in the management of natural resources, particularly in regions where local communities are directly affected. By fostering dialogue, there is potential for sustainable development that acknowledges and respects the rights and concerns of landowners while advancing economic growth.

In conclusion, the minister’s continued dedication to inclusive discussions and consideration of landowner perspectives reflects a positive shift towards more responsible governance in the mining sector.
