Lautoka’s Under-16 football team has made a remarkable achievement by winning the first-ever National Under-16 league title after an impressive playoff run over the weekend. The team secured their championship by defeating Labasa 1-0, thanks to a crucial goal from Veleni Rasorewa, at the Fiji Football Academy ground in Vatuwaqa. Prior to this victory, Lautoka battled to a thrilling 3-2 win against Navua in their opening playoff match.

Coach Kaveen Chand expressed immense pride in his team’s accomplishment, acknowledging the difficulties they encountered along the way. The pressure from formidable opponents like Labasa and Navua, both recognized as regional champions, added to the challenge. Chand stated, “It’s a great achievement as it will go in the history book of Lautoka football since this was the first-ever playoff for the Under-16 division and baby blues won this,” underlining the historical significance of their win.

Throughout the league, Lautoka faced various hurdles, including the absence of key players committed to elite teams in Labasa, weather challenges during training, and a demanding schedule consisting of weekly away games. Looking forward, Coach Chand emphasized the importance of preparing for the upcoming 2025 season. He highlighted the need to bring in experienced players who can guide the younger talent within the squad.

Chand also expressed gratitude towards the loyal supporters, officials, and parents who provided steadfast encouragement throughout the league campaign. In an interesting development, Labasa is scheduled to face Navua in the final playoffs later today.

The victory of Lautoka’s Under-16 team signifies not only a historic moment for the club but also showcases the rise of young talent within Fijian football. Their journey illustrates the values of perseverance and teamwork, and as they prepare for the next season, there is a hopeful outlook that they will continue to thrive and contribute positively to the future of football in Fiji.
