Swire Shipping Fijian Drua players Inia Tabuavou and Peni Matawalu have officially joined the Lautoka Rugby Union as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Skipper Cup competition. These two athletes, currently the only members from the Drua to join the Lautoka squad this year, are expected to leverage their Super Rugby Pacific experience and leadership to benefit the team.

Lautoka Rugby’s head coach, Peniona Ranitu, confirmed that both Tabuavou and Matawalu are actively engaged in off-season training and have made a smooth transition into the squad. Following the conclusion of their Lautoka franchise competition, where the Duavata Forces emerged as champions, the focus is now shifting towards pre-season preparations in anticipation of the Skipper Cup season set to commence in September.

Ranitu highlighted that Lautoka’s current extended squad includes 55 players, emphasizing the importance of refining team combinations and enhancing overall fitness ahead of the competition. With experienced players such as Matawalu and Tabuavou onboard, Lautoka is aiming for a strong debut when the Skipper Cup begins later this year.

This strategic addition not only strengthens the squad but also showcases Lautoka Rugby’s commitment to improving their performance in the league. The integration of seasoned players like Tabuavou and Matawalu promises to foster a competitive spirit within the team, igniting hope among coaches and fans alike for a successful season ahead.

The Fijian rugby landscape continues to evolve positively, providing opportunities for players to showcase their talents and contribute to their clubs. Fans eagerly anticipate the impact these players will have as the season unfolds, reinforcing the vibrant community support for rugby in Fiji.
