Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has strongly criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for allegedly losing control over his ministers and failing to effectively govern the nation. During a parliamentary session, Kumar spoke out against the government’s habit of shifting blame to the previous FijiFirst administration for various issues, such as equipment failures in hospitals and a lack of medical supplies.

In her response to the President’s address, Kumar questioned when the government would cease this blame game and focus on addressing the nation’s pressing challenges. She lamented that instead of implementing necessary reforms, the Coalition Government hosts costly events and engages in unproductive meetings, while talking about future initiatives that have yet to materialize.

Kumar also highlighted concerns regarding the management of the judiciary, asserting that critical questions have arisen regarding the government’s commitment to justice. She called on the Coalition to move beyond merely cutting ribbons for projects initiated by the FijiFirst party and begin generating tangible outcomes for the people.

Kumar’s concerns echo criticisms from previous discussions in the Parliament, where the government’s performance has been called into question, and allegations of stifling dissent through limited parliamentary engagement have been raised. Similar sentiments were voiced when she criticized Rabuka’s recent cabinet expansion, which brought the number of ministers to an unprecedented 34, raising questions about accountability and efficiency.

This ongoing political discourse reflects a growing call for improved governance and accountability from the current administration. As the Parliament reconvenes, there is hope that the push for transparency and active governance could lead to meaningful reforms that align with the needs and expectations of the Fijian public. Continuing these discussions may foster a government that is more responsive to community needs, ultimately rebuilding trust in leadership.
