The Supercool Vatukoro under 18-21 rugby team has engaged in a fundraising effort centered around selling $10 kaji playing cards to support their preparation for the upcoming Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival. This tournament, set to take place over four days at the Wairiki Parish Grounds on Taveuni Island, saw the team journey from Nausori, Nalawa, Ra to compete in the event.

Team coach Ilai Nameke expressed gratitude for the support received from parents and the community of Nausori Village, particularly highlighting their efforts in raising funds for essentials like a bag of chicken, which helped sustain the team’s spirit and morale. Despite their geographical challenges, Nameke emphasized that their isolation has also led to greater resilience and determination among the players.

The team’s hard work paid off as they competed in their pool matches. Although they suffered a narrow defeat of 5-7 against St Teresa Naba, they celebrated a significant victory of 24-0 against Naselesele. Remarkably, the experience at the tournament has already yielded positive outcomes, with one team member earning a selection for the national under-20 team.

The Supercool Vatukoro team is competing in Pool 4 of the U18-21 category alongside Naselesele, Davetalevu, and St Teresa Naba. The journey they have taken, combined with their commitment and community support, highlights the positive impact of sports in fostering teamwork and perseverance among young athletes.

This story serves as a reminder of how community engagement and support can bridge gaps and enhance opportunities for youth development, especially in sports. As they move forward, the team’s resilience points toward a promising future in rugby.

Overall, the fundraising efforts reflect not just determination but also the unwavering spirit of youth athletics in Fiji, paving the way for growth and achievement in the realm of sports.
