The villagers of Matasawalevu in Kadavu are actively promoting sustainable livelihood initiatives through a recent seaweed harvest, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries.

Ministry officers from the Kavala Station joined forces with local community members to efficiently harvest and sort seaweed at Matasawalevu Village. This activity is part of broader programs aimed at encouraging responsible resource management and creating alternative sources of income.

This recent harvest builds on the foundation laid last October when the village completed its inaugural seaweed harvest. That initial venture introduced a new income stream aimed at enhancing household livelihoods while concurrently safeguarding the marine environment.

The ongoing seaweed harvesting efforts highlight the community’s increasing commitment to environmentally sustainable practices, which aim to alleviate pressure on traditional fishing grounds. Furthermore, this initiative showcases the village’s resilience and proactive approach in embracing new economic activities that align with long-term goals for conservation and sustainability. Through these efforts, Matasawalevu continues to set a positive example in balancing economic development with environmental stewardship.
