The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry is intensifying its commitment to enhancing food security in Kadavu. Officers are actively implementing various initiatives on the island designed to boost local food production and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Teams from the Land Resources Planning and Crop Extension divisions are expanding the School Garden Programme at Richmond Methodist High School and Tiliva District School. This initiative not only involves the construction of nurseries and box farms but also provides students with practical farming experience, fostering healthy eating habits and encouraging self-sufficiency among young learners.

In Muani, officials are conducting mapping efforts in logged forest areas to pinpoint degraded land eligible for rehabilitation. This endeavor aims to restore soil health, which is crucial for improving long-term agricultural productivity.

Furthermore, an agro-ecology demonstration site is being established in Solovola, Ravitaki. This site is set to showcase sustainable farming techniques that not only safeguard the environment but also help to enhance the community’s local food supply.

The Ministry emphasizes that these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to cultivate resilient agricultural systems, ultimately reducing the dependence on imported food within rural communities. This proactive approach not only aims to bolster food security but also supports the growth of sustainable livelihoods in the region.
