India emphatically overcame the challenges of the past by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in Ahmedabad, successfully defending their T20 World Cup title. This victory is a significant turnaround from two and a half years ago when India faltered under pressure against Australia in the 50-over World Cup final at the same venue.

In stark contrast to their previous performance, the Indian batsmen thrived in excellent batting conditions, achieving a formidable total of 255-5. Sanju Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 runs off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan made valuable contributions with 52 and 54 runs, respectively, off just 21 and 25 balls. The innings was momentarily stymied by Jimmy Neesham’s standout performance, as he took three wickets in the 16th over. Nevertheless, Shivam Dube’s late surge of 24 runs from the final over helped bolster India’s score further.

New Zealand, in their chase, faced early setbacks losing wickets at regular intervals, including the dangerous Finn Allen, who was dismissed for just nine runs. Tim Seifert attempted to counterattack with a quick 52 runs from 26 balls, but the team ultimately faltered, getting bowled out for 159 runs in just 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental in dismantling New Zealand’s batting lineup, finishing with impressive figures of 4 wickets for just 15 runs.

This triumph marks India as the first team to successfully defend the men’s T20 World Cup title and adds to their impressive streak, having now won three consecutive men’s white-ball tournaments—the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and this latest victory. For New Zealand, the disappointment continues as they face the heartache of yet another final loss, following their previous near misses in 2015, 2019, and 2021. As India celebrates this significant achievement, the cricketing world awaits what comes next for both teams on their respective journeys.
