United's Attack Woes: Can Hojlund Reignite His Scoring Form?

Hojlund’s Goal Drought Deepens: Can United Turn the Tide?

Manchester United’s attacking troubles continued as they suffered another setback, falling to Fulham in the FA Cup following a penalty shootout. This match marked the 18th consecutive game without a goal for forward Rasmus Hojlund, a sharp decline from the promising start he had after transferring from Atalanta for £72 million. Hojlund’s last goal was recorded in December against Viktoria Plzen, emphasizing his ongoing frustrations after he managed only one shot that missed the target during the Fulham encounter.

In addition to Hojlund’s struggles, teammate Joshua Zirkzee has similarly found the net just once in his last 16 matches, highlighting the team’s ongoing difficulties in finding offensive consistency. During the match, Hojlund was substituted late in favor of teen star Chido Obi, who showed more attacking intent with three shots on goal, prompting a crucial save from Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Manager Ruben Amorim pointed to a lack of service as a major factor in Hojlund’s goal drought, a situation made worse by injuries and the departure of key players like Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford. The absence of several first-team players sidelined by injuries has further limited United’s offensive options.

Analysis indicated a notable shift in the team’s dynamics once Alejandro Garnacho was introduced into the match, as United started creating more opportunities compared to their ineffective first half performance. Former United captain Wayne Rooney expressed concerns, stating, “The ball speed is too slow… Hojlund is isolated and is not receiving the support he needs,” a sentiment that resonates with the ongoing challenges in United’s attacking approach under Amorim, who is navigating a transitional phase for the club.

Despite the current difficulties faced by Hojlund, there is still optimism. He displayed considerable potential during his time at Sturm Graz, and while this season has proven tough, a resurgence is possible. The anticipated return of injured players, alongside the emergence of promising talents like Obi, may inject the necessary creativity and support that has been desperately needed.

Looking toward the future, Manchester United’s management and supporters will be eager for a resurgence not just in Hojlund’s form, but also in the team’s overall attacking effectiveness as they aim to reclaim their competitive stature in the league.
