Moana Pasifika’s captain Ardie Savea has made history by winning the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year award for 2025. Coming off an incredible season, Savea established an insurmountable lead in the voting with two weeks left in the regular season. His achievement underscores his vital role in leading the team to their first-ever win against the Blues at North Harbour Stadium.

In a triumphant display on the field, Savea notched up the maximum six votes in the recent match against the Blues, bringing his total to 42 votes throughout the season, comfortably ahead of competitors Tom Hooper and Damian McKenzie. Over ten appearances this season, Savea has scored five tries, recorded over 330 post-contact metres, made 115 tackles, and won 13 turnovers—impressive stats that highlight his importance to the team.

Savea expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It’s a huge honour and blessing to receive this award. I wouldn’t be the player I am this year or where I am without the team and the brothers.” His humility reflects the spirit of teamwork and family that he embodies, emphasizing the collective effort behind his success.

Moana Pasifika’s head coach Fa’alogo Tana Umaga noted Savea’s profound impact not only in matches but in cultivating a strong team culture. “This award is a testament to the leader he is and what he represents. His faith, his family, his culture, and his people shine a light on everything he does behind the scenes,” Umaga remarked.

Savea’s captaincy has energized Moana Pasifika, who currently sit sixth in the standings and are pushing for their first finals appearance in the league’s history. Super Rugby Pacific CEO Jack Mesley lauded Savea’s contributions, stating that his consistent performances have left a lasting impression on both teammates and opponents, confirming his status as a standout player this season.

The award ceremony will take place during Moana Pasifika’s final regular-season game against the Hurricanes at Sky Stadium on May 31, marking a significant closing chapter for a season that has seen the team grow immensely. With Savea at the helm, the future looks bright for Moana Pasifika as they aim to establish themselves further within Super Rugby Pacific.

This latest accolade not only reflects Savea’s individual prowess but also represents a turning point for his team, offering hope and excitement to fans who anticipate further success. As Moana Pasifika continues to build on this foundation, their journey in the league promises to foster resilience, teamwork, and potentially a burgeoning legacy in Pacific rugby.
