Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua has refuted claims made by Opposition MP Hem Chand regarding health issues in local residents that occurred after the incineration of over four tonnes of methamphetamine last week. In a parliamentary session, Naivalurua stressed that the incineration was conducted in accordance with strict standards and protocols and deemed essential for law enforcement’s efforts to combat the drug crisis while ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Naivalurua reassured the public about their health and safety, asserting, “There is no cause for alarm. Our people’s safety and security are integral to the well-being of the nation.” He noted the widespread effect that drugs, crime, and violence have on communities, encouraging Fijians to come together in support of their neighborhoods.
These statements come in response to concerns voiced by local schools and residents following the incineration at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu. Reports had surfaced regarding students from nearby institutions, including Bhawani Dayal and Nasinu Muslim Primary, experiencing headaches and respiratory issues, prompting health precautions like mask distribution among students.
Despite these worries, Naivalurua maintained the importance of a collaborative community approach to tackle these significant challenges, urging focus on constructive solutions rather than political disputes. This sentiment aligns with previous statements from police leaders who have affirmed that robust safety measures were implemented during the drug destruction process.
The overarching goal of these operations is not only to safely eliminate dangerous substances but also to demonstrate a commitment to fostering a safer environment. The collaboration among various government ministries and law enforcement agencies symbolizes a united front against drug-related crime in Fiji, inspiring hope for a healthier future.
Through these initiatives, authorities aim to show their dedication to protecting public health while directly confronting the drug crisis, reinforcing Fiji’s movement towards a more secure and drug-free society.
