The Chair of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, emphasizes that the ongoing discussions regarding the relevance of the GCC in contemporary society fail to acknowledge its crucial role. Since its re-establishment in 2023, the institution has been the subject of public debate, yet Ratu Viliame firmly asserts that it remains essential at the top of the iTaukei Administration.

He argues that the GCC plays a vital role in providing the moral and ethical framework important for the social fabric of indigenous Fijians. While he acknowledges that the public may not perceive any immediate impact from the GCC’s activities, he insists that its current functions involve identifying significant issues, offering recommendations, and collaborating closely with the Government.

Ratu Viliame also pointed out a significant challenge for the GCC—the slow progress in achieving operational independence from the Government, which has hindered its ability to fully execute its responsibilities. Despite these challenges, the GCC is committed to fostering dialogue and supporting the interests of the iTaukei community, underscoring its relevance in promoting cultural integrity and social harmony in modern Fiji.
