Two significant stories feature on the front page of The Sunday Times for December 1.

First, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his willingness to investigate the professional ties between iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu and business partner Jason Zhong, should this concern be formally brought to him. Although no reports have reached his office yet, Rabuka remarked that he would engage with Vasu before proceeding further. This follows revelations by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which highlighted a 2020 police briefing document that profiles Zhong.

In response, Vasu has stated that he will not provide additional comments on the matter.

The second prominent issue is the rise in fuel prices, which will require consumers to spend more at the pump starting today. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) explained that this adjustment follows a one-month lag period. To prevent price gouging, enforcement teams will monitor wholesale and retail outlets and service stations. The adjusted fuel prices are as follows: Motor Spirit is now $2.67 from $2.62, Premix has increased to $2.51 from $2.43, Kerosene to $1.74 from $1.67, Diesel to $2.27 from $2.18, the 4.5kg Cylinder is now $15.35 from $14.97, and the 12kg Cylinder is priced at $40.92 from $39.91.

In the realm of road safety, there is growing concern as national road fatalities have reached 55 this year, although this is fewer than the 74 deaths recorded within the same timeframe last year. The tragic loss of an eight-year-old girl, who was struck by a vehicle while crossing with her father in Suva, underscores the urgent call for increased vigilance on the roads. Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, has urged all road users to engage responsibly with traffic regulations.

As December marks the beginning of the festive season, there’s anticipated joy and mobility across the country as families and friends come together to celebrate. However, it is crucial to prioritize safety during this period of increased travel. The article encourages everyone to adhere to road rules, plan journeys proactively, and be mindful of the risks on the road.

As we enter this festive month, let us embrace the spirit of safety and responsibility on the roads. It is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate both safely and joyfully, ensuring that everyone arrives safely at their destinations. By fostering a collective commitment to road safety, we can reduce accidents and save lives.
