The National Fire Authority (NFA) confirmed a considerable fuel loss due to a leak at the Petro Oceania terminal located along Foster Road, Walu Bay, early this morning. The incident was first reported shortly after 8:00 AM, which prompted a swift response from NFA crews based in Suva.
Initial assessments recorded the fuel height at the terminal at 8 meters, equating to an estimated volume of 1,160,000 liters. By 11:40 AM, the fuel level had decreased to 7.5 meters, indicating a loss of approximately 180,000 liters.
Acting NFA CEO Joel Israel stated that monitoring and containment actions are currently in effect, assuring that the situation remains under control. “Petro Oceania contractors have successfully patched the affected area and transferred more than half of the terminal’s contents into an empty tank. Engineers are actively engaged in repairing the leak, which is anticipated to take between three to four hours,” he mentioned.
To manage the situation, NFA has deployed a team including 17 firefighters, four senior officers, and three fire trucks at the site. Meanwhile, police officers are overseeing traffic management and securing the perimeter. The National Disaster Management Office has also been informed and is keeping an eye on the developments.
Israel reassured the community that all safety measures are being observed and advised residents to avoid the area. The NFA will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses. For emergencies, the public is encouraged to contact the NFA at 910.
