Naeca Vatanitawake, a dedicated athlete from the Yasawa-i-Rara village, is fully immersed in the excitement of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games held at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Reflecting on his journey, Vatanitawake shared the challenges he faced in traveling from his remote village to compete.

“The journey from the village is tough,” he noted. “We’ve worked hard to earn some medals in this competition.” He contrasted life in Suva, where resources are easily accessible, with his village, where basic necessities often require effort to procure.

Sprinting, a favorite activity of his, brings him joy in the competition, and he expressed gratitude to God for the strength to participate. Vatanitawake and his athletics squad faced numerous hurdles in their preparation, including limited financial support and rigorous training, yet they maintained hope and faith in their potential to succeed.

He proudly shared his recent accomplishments, including being named dux of Bukama village school, an achievement he didn’t expect but which brought joy to his family, who are planning a celebratory feast. Vatanitawake also passed the Fiji Year Eight examination and encouraged his peers to strive for excellence in both academics and sports. “If you find yourself struggling academically, turn to sports,” he advised.

In addition to athletics, he plays as a first-five eight in rugby and aspires to join the national team, inspired by his favorite player, Caleb Muntz.

Vatanitawake’s story is one of resilience and aspiration, highlighting the significant impact of determination and support from family and community. His journey serves as an encouragement for young athletes everywhere to pursue their dreams relentlessly, both in sports and academics.

This message of hope and perseverance shines brightly in Vatanitawake’s narrative, inspiring others to overcome obstacles and reach for their goals.
