Manasa Katonivere, a Year 11 student at Nabua Secondary School, delivered an inspiring message about the importance of hard work in his life and education. Earlier this year, he encountered challenges when trying to enroll in a secondary school in Suva. Coming from a low-income background and lacking support from peers, he faced significant hurdles in finding his place.
In light of these challenges, his parents purchased a brush cutter, allowing Manasa to earn some income to support his education. His determination and resilience shone through as he navigated the difficulties, with local customer Nirmal Singh Cheema playing a pivotal role in his journey. Manasa expressed deep gratitude for Cheema’s mentorship, stating, “Seeing my parents struggle from time to time, I knew I had to level up and become the best version of myself every day.”
Manasa spent his days cutting grass in the neighborhood to make ends meet, and his efforts culminated in recognition at a prize-giving ceremony where he was acknowledged for his participation in the AFL Under-17 tournaments in Australia earlier this year. This award was not just a token of achievement for Manasa but also a significant milestone on his path to personal growth.
Mr. Cheema emphasized the importance of community support in nurturing youth potential, declaring that his backing was driven by the desire to recognize and foster talent, rather than simply giving back. “I firmly believe in the adage, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’” he remarked. He urged society to provide encouragement and resources to young individuals who dream of success, and reminded schools not to overlook any student, as everyone has the potential to contribute meaningfully to society.
This uplifting story highlights the impact of hard work, community support, and the belief in oneself. It serves as a reminder that with perseverance and guidance, young people can overcome their challenges and strive towards their dreams, inspiring others along the way.
In today’s world, where many face adversity, Manasa’s journey stands as a beacon of hope, showcasing that with tenacity and support from those around us, it is indeed possible to rise above circumstances and achieve greatness.
