Tevita Tui, a former combat sports athlete, has faced significant health challenges following his career in the ring. According to a report by The Fiji Times dated September 4, 1984, Tui is currently experiencing progressive blindness, a condition that arose after eight years of competition, four of which were at the professional level where he achieved an impressive record of 30 wins out of 35 bouts.

In a bid to support those with disabilities, Tui has been actively fundraising for the Disabled Trust. His latest initiative involves a planned run from Navua to Suva, building on the success of a previous run he completed from Nausori to Suva with the backing of supporters, including national rugby flyhalf Acura Niuqila. Tui aims to raise much-needed funds for individuals facing similar challenges, stating, “I want to do something to help the country, especially disabled people.”

At 32 years old, Tui’s fight extends beyond the ring, as he finds himself reliant on a modest welfare cheque after losing his job as a plumber with the Public Works Department. Despite his circumstances, Tui remains determined to help others, inviting wide participation in his fundraising endeavors. He hopes to raise at least $1,000 before the December run and encourages those wishing to assist him to get in touch.

In addition to his fundraising efforts, Tui is exploring options for an operation in the United States that could potentially restore his eyesight, highlighting his ongoing struggle and hope for improvement despite the adversity he faces. Originally from Lau and born in Natewa Bay, Vanua Levu, Tui continues to inspire others by channeling his experiences into helping fellow struggling athletes through the trust, alongside a dedicated group of members.
