The first reported house fire of 2026 has devastated a three-bedroom property in Tacirua, leading the National Fire Authority (NFA) to remind the community about the importance of fire safety. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon along Princes Road, adjacent to the Tacirua Bus Garage.
Joel Israel, the acting chief executive officer of the NFA, shared that crews from the Suva Fire Station responded promptly. Upon arrival, firefighters found the structure completely engulfed in flames and quickly deployed multiple hose lines along with water supplies from their fire trucks to control the fire. By 4:22 PM, they had fully extinguished the blaze, though the house suffered significant damage, with 99 percent of its 396 square meters affected. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
On the same day in Tuatua, Labasa, firefighters attended to a separate incident involving a vehicle fire around 8 AM. Upon reaching the scene, they found a car that had veered off the road and overturned in a nearby compound. This vehicle was carrying a family of five on their way to Nabouwalu to catch a ferry to Natovi. Thankfully, bystanders had intervened, rescuing the occupants and transporting them to Labasa Hospital prior to the arrival of the fire crew. After securing the area by switching off the vehicle’s ignition, firefighters handed the incident over to the Fiji Police Force for further investigation.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of fire hazards and the importance of community awareness and preparedness in ensuring safety.
