The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has announced the formation of a gender task force aimed at improving workplace facilities in response to gaps identified in their current provisions. Chief Executive Seru Soderberg made these comments during discussions on the Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill before the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.

Soderberg noted that WAF has historically been male-dominated, leading to operational sites that primarily feature male washrooms. However, he emphasized the organization’s commitment to change, stating, “We are actively working towards building new washrooms to accommodate for our female colleagues. And I don’t see any issues with facilitating a special area to facilitate breastfeeding.”

This statement reflects a growing recognition of the need to enhance workplace conditions for women, particularly young mothers, as the demographics of the workforce evolve. Committee Chair Sakiusa Tubuna underscored the importance of the proposed Bill, highlighting its provisions designed to support women, which include improved facilities for breastfeeding mothers.

The establishment of the gender task force marks a significant step toward creating a more inclusive environment at WAF, demonstrating a dedication to ensuring that all employees have access to adequate facilities that support their well-being and work-life balance. This initiative is a positive move towards breaking down barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field, reflecting broader trends towards gender equity in the workforce.
