Fiji’s Surge in Crime: Can New Policing Reforms Bring Hope?

This year kicked off with a worrying 26 percent increase in overall crime rates for January, as reported by Ioane Naivalurua, the Minister for Policing, during a recent parliamentary session. This rise follows a significant escalation of 27 percent in crime rates observed in the previous year, igniting discussions about public safety across the nation.

Naivalurua pointed out that criminal activities are becoming increasingly sophisticated, necessitating an innovative approach in law enforcement. To combat this evolving challenge, police operations are set to be intensified over the next three months, with plans to enhance visibility and establish effective operational protocols.

“My aim since taking office has been to modernize and strengthen the Fiji Police Force to keep pace with the changing security landscape,” Naivalurua emphasized. Initiatives like the Police Uplift Initiative are underway to upgrade the force’s capabilities in tackling the urgent public safety concerns that accompany this rise in crime.

Highlighting the need for reform, Naivalurua called for a review of the outdated Police Act from 1965, which currently limits the integration of new technologies and capabilities within the force. This proposed review is deemed critical for not only improving law enforcement services but also for restoring public trust in the police.

Moreover, Naivalurua announced that the Cabinet has approved the Counter Narcotics Bill aimed at strengthening the Bureau’s functions in addressing drug-related offenses. The first draft of this legislative measure has already been completed, with future consultations planned to involve community input on its implementation.

The commitment to enhancing the Fiji Police Force reflects a proactive stance towards crime prevention, particularly in light of increasing incidents, especially those affecting vulnerable populations like women and children. Addressing these issues through community engagement is viewed as an urgent necessity.
