Fiji’s athletics team is gearing up for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games, and Braelynn Yee will be a central figure in their quest to challenge Papua New Guinea’s longstanding dominance in sprinting. As one of Fiji’s most experienced athletes, Yee has consistently excelled over the past decade, representing the nation in numerous prestigious events including the Oceania Championships and the Pacific Games.

Now residing in Brisbane, Australia, Yee is not only focused on her athletic career but also on her academic achievements. Recently, she received the Griffith University Oceania Australia Foundation Athletics Business Scholarship, which enables her to pursue a Bachelor of Business while training alongside elite athletes. She emphasizes the importance of education alongside her passion for track, stating, “God gave me this talent, and I’m good at it—so why should I not make use of this talent that God blessed me with?”

Yee began her athletic journey during Fiji’s top school competitions, the Coca-Cola Games, where she emerged as a formidable competitor. After competing for Natabua High School, she seamlessly transitioned to St. Joseph’s Secondary School, continuing to excel in sprinting events. Now, she is poised to lead Fiji’s sprint squad into the Mini Games, where she will vie for medals in both the 100m and relay events.

Her determination mirrors that of other athletes from Fiji, like Heleina Young, who is also making a noteworthy comeback after a six-year hiatus from track and field due to rugby. Young’s experience highlights the resilience and commitment within the Fijian athletics community, inspiring many younger athletes to strive for excellence.

With the Pacific Mini Games scheduled for June 29 to July 9, there’s a shared excitement that runs deep in the Fijian athletic community. As athletes prepare to challenge themselves on an international stage, there is a sense of hope that they will emerge not only with medals but as role models for future generations. Their collective goal is to showcase the spirit of perseverance and determination that defines Fijian sports culture.

The upcoming competitions serve as a fantastic opportunity for athletes to prove themselves, foster national pride, and inspire young sports enthusiasts across Fiji. With individuals like Yee and Young leading the charge, the future of Fijian athletics looks promising.
