The Fiji Airways national men’s and women’s rugby teams experienced a mix of outcomes in their first matches of the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS Series, which kicked off in Dubai yesterday.

The women’s team, known as the Fijiana, faced off against Ireland but unfortunately fell short, losing 12-30. Despite a promising start with Vika Nakacia scoring a try on her debut to give Fiji an early 7-nil lead, the team struggled to maintain momentum. Ireland responded with five consecutive tries, although Ilisapeci Delaiwau managed to score a consolation try for Fiji just before the match concluded.

On a more positive note, the men’s team, coached by Osea Kolinisau, secured a narrow victory against Spain, winning 21-15. Newcomers Kavekini Tanivanuakula and George Bose both made their mark by scoring tries, with Terio Tamani also contributing to the team’s score.

Looking ahead, the tournament’s cup quarter-finals are set to begin at 6:48 PM today, followed by the semi-finals at 10:06 PM, and the final scheduled for 4:11 AM tomorrow.

The results showcase the challenges faced by the Fijiana while highlighting the promising talent within the men’s team. As they continue in the tournament, both teams have an opportunity to regroup and build on their experiences, with hopes for improved performances in their upcoming matches.

This blend of outcomes sets the stage for an exciting series where both teams can showcase their resilience and skill.
