Fiji Faces Alarming Scam Surge: What You Need to Know

Fiji’s Scam Crisis: Nearly Half the Population at Risk!

A new report has highlighted a worrying trend in Fiji, revealing that nearly 50% of the population has succumbed to scams. The 2024 State of Scams in Fiji report, published by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), surveyed 133 participants and identified an increasing threat from scams, while also showcasing opportunities to combat these fraudulent activities.

The findings indicate that although 66% of respondents feel capable of recognizing scams—slightly below the global average—over half reported being targeted by scams at least once a month, surpassing global averages. Disturbingly, individuals who have been victimized are more likely to be targeted again within the same year.

The report aligns with global scam trends, highlighting prevalent schemes in Fiji including shopping fraud, identity theft, and investment scams, which together constitute 69% of all global scam incidents. This revelation echoes concerns raised during the first National Scam Awareness Week, during which officials underscored the importance of remaining vigilant against various fraudulent practices, particularly those driven by impersonation and misinformation spread via social media.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica noted that since 2019, there have been over 1,700 scam-related complaints filed, resulting in losses exceeding $3 million, especially linked to eBay scams. In light of this escalating issue, the government has initiated the Anti-Scam Taskforce aimed at improving coordination among agencies, raising public awareness, and crafting effective strategies to lessen the impact of scams on citizens.

Despite ongoing educational campaigns, engagement within the community tends to remain low until individuals have personally experienced scams. This underscores a pressing need for better outreach and support. The collective efforts of the taskforce aim to foster a more informed and resilient society in the face of rising global online fraud rates.

This report not only reveals the challenging landscape of fraud in Fiji but also carries a hopeful message: with increased awareness and community involvement, there is a strong possibility for meaningful progress in the fight against scams, ultimately safeguarding the public.
