The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is facing significant challenges as it endeavors to secure a place in the National Rugby League (NRL). The primary obstacle is the lack of adequate facilities for hosting competitions, which has necessitated the use of shared venues like Bidesi Park in Suva and Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on alternate weekends.

FNRL chairman Akuila Masi has reached out to landowners to assist in the search for a permanent location. “If any landowners are listening, we are desperate for land, and we have been actively pursuing options,” he stated. Masi acknowledged the difficulties posed by the lack of dedicated facilities and expressed hope of finalizing a 10-year plan with the NRL by the end of the year, which includes the development of necessary facilities.

Securing these facilities is crucial for enhancing Fiji’s bid to join the NRL as the 18th expansion team, following Papua New Guinea, which has already been granted a license set for 2028. Masi emphasized that meeting NRL criteria, including grassroots development programs and local competitions, is essential for their application. Although Fiji has not requested financial help from Australian sources, there is a determination to strengthen its rugby league infrastructure and community support.

The Fijian government’s backing is a beacon of hope for the FNRL, as Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, confirmed that officials are committed to supporting this initiative. This support could potentially lead to greater recognition of Fiji’s rugby culture and provide platforms for local talents to excel.

The situation reflects a broader commitment to the sport in Fiji, highlighting the collective ambition to elevate its standing in international rugby league. Although challenges remain, the ongoing efforts provide a foundation for optimism and the possibility of a bright future for rugby league in Fiji.
