The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has announced a commendable net revenue collection of $1.2 billion for the first four months of the current fiscal year. This figure surpasses their original forecast by $105 million, reflecting an impressive growth of 18 percent or an increase of $178 million compared to the same timeframe last year.

The consistency in revenue collection has been a hallmark of FRCS’s performance, with notable monthly figures contributing to the overall success. In August, collections reached $291.9 million, exceeding forecasts by $53.5 million, or 22.5 percent. September continued the trend with a net revenue of $290.9 million, surpassing expectations by $8.6 million, which is a 3.1 percent increase. October demonstrated even more growth, with revenue surging to $300 million—an increase of $24 million or 8.7 percent over the forecast. In November, net revenue dipped slightly to $286.5 million, but still exceeded projections by $18.9 million (7.1 percent).

CEO Udit Singh attributes this strong performance to robust activity in key sectors of the economy, especially driven by a resurgence in tourism. He noted that an uptick in income tax payments, caused by improved business health and profitability, along with rising consumer demand impacting VAT collections, have significantly supported this positive trend. Singh also highlighted the effective compliance initiatives undertaken by FRCS, such as the VAT Compliance Drive, educational programs, and the establishment of the new Post Assessment Verification Unit as critical factors in enhancing revenue streams.

Looking ahead, Singh remains optimistic, asserting that the promising performance could continue through December 2024 and beyond. This outlook reflects the resilience and recovery of Fiji’s economy, with tourism and other sectors regaining momentum, creating a hopeful anticipation for continued growth.

In summary, the positive revenue collection not only showcases fiscal effectiveness but also signals broader economic recovery, encouraging a prosperous future for Fiji.
