Fiji’s Political Turmoil: Deputy PM’s Bold Reprimand Sparks Controversy

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has expressed strong disapproval of Justice David Ashton-Lewis for discussing the findings of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) before its official release. He stated, “What I will say though is that the learned Judge showed no respect to His Excellency the President and Honourable PM by talking about the COI report publicly before its release.” Kamikamica described the judge’s actions as “veibeci and qaciqacia,” terms that suggest a lack of respect and arrogance.

Regarding the judge’s previous remarks about a “wannabe Prime Minister,” Kamikamica humorously suggested, “I assume it is me because I do smile a lot.” However, he found such comments unnecessary and disrespectful, asserting that he joined the government simply to aid in rebuilding Fiji, rather than to pursue personal political aspirations. “Never have and never will. Fiji needs stability,” he confirmed.

Kamikamica has decided to seek legal advice as he prepares for the COI report’s release. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparency concerning the investigation into the former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, which involves serious allegations against nine individuals, including instances of misconduct such as perjury and obstruction of justice.

The ongoing inquiry is a pivotal moment in Fiji’s political climate, as it emphasizes accountability and integrity within the nation’s governance. It is hoped that the findings from the COI will not only highlight areas for reform but also foster a renewed trust among the Fijian populace in their political institutions. By focusing on collaboration and collective ambitions, leaders like Kamikamica are setting a foundation for a politically stable and prosperous Fiji in the future.
