Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged the Opposition to work collaboratively with the Government on proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution. In a parliamentary address, Rabuka stressed that for meaningful changes to take place, bipartisan support is essential. He expressed willingness to engage in talks, responding positively to Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu’s call for such discussions, with the aim of addressing Fiji’s pressing issues together.

Rabuka pointed out that while the 2013 Constitution has provided a stable foundation, it is time for revisions to better reflect the voices and aspirations of the Fijian people. He stated, “With the cooperation of the opposition, I’m sure we can go through those bills that we have planned to be presented in the House, debate them properly, and execute them.” He highlighted Fiji’s historical context of constitutional changes since its independence in 1970 and emphasized the need for a ‘People’s Constitution’ that actively encourages citizen input during the review process.

The Prime Minister underscored the necessity of public consultations, which could be facilitated through a special committee or a national dialogue, urging Members of Parliament to fulfill their roles as representatives of the populace in shaping the laws of the nation.

Rabuka’s approach of promoting inclusive dialogue resonates with earlier discussions he initiated regarding constitutional amendments aimed at fostering a governance framework that mirrors Fiji’s multicultural society. This renewed emphasis on cooperation and accountability represents a hopeful shift towards rebuilding trust in the Fijian community, ensuring the legislative framework aligns with the interests of its diverse population.

In the context of rising political divisions globally, Rabuka’s invitation for collaborative engagement may prove vital in fostering unity and reconciliation in Fiji, setting a promising precedent for a governance style deeply rooted in inclusivity and community participation.
