A National Price Monitoring Taskforce is set to be launched in Fiji to protect consumer interests amidst ongoing economic challenges. This new initiative aims to ensure that reductions in taxes and duties are effectively passed on to consumers through retail pricing. The taskforce will involve key enforcement agencies, including the Consumer Council of Fiji, the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS).

Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council, has pointed out a significant aspect of the 2025-26 national budget, where the Value Added Tax (VAT) will be decreased from 15% to 12.5%. This reduction is anticipated to alleviate financial pressures on consumers across the country. However, Shandil cautioned that past instances of VAT increases have quickly translated into higher costs for consumers, while reductions have not always reflected on store shelves, often benefiting retailers instead.

With the establishment of the Price Monitoring Taskforce, Shandil assured that vigilant oversight will be enforced to prevent complacency among retailers. The taskforce will collaborate closely with its member agencies to monitor pricing dynamics and ensure that the savings from tax reductions are passed on to the consumers effectively.

This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to tackle high living costs, as outlined in previous discussions concerning Fiji’s economic reforms. Having already reduced tariffs on certain goods to enhance market competition, the government is acknowledging the critical importance of fair pricing during these turbulent economic times. Shandil emphasized that Fijians should fully benefit from these fiscal decisions, signaling a hopeful outlook for consumers.

Moreover, the government’s active engagement with its regulatory bodies highlights a commitment to fostering a competitive market landscape and protecting consumer rights. By creating rigorous mechanisms for price monitoring, the government aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the retail sector, fostering greater economic resilience for all Fijians amid challenging conditions.
