Overseas employment programs are significantly improving the livelihoods of many Fijian workers and their families. According to Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Agni Deo Singh, initiatives facilitated through the National Employment Centre are creating valuable opportunities for individuals seeking work both locally and internationally.

Singh highlighted the government’s efforts in organizing job fairs across Fiji as a means to connect job seekers directly with potential employers. Over the past three years, these job fairs have taken place in various cities including Nadi, Ba, Suva, and Labasa, where numerous employers have engaged with candidates on the spot.

In addition to local employment opportunities, the center is also playing a crucial role in facilitating overseas work, particularly through seasonal agricultural jobs in Australia and the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme in New Zealand. The minister noted a number of success stories from Fijian workers who have benefited financially from these opportunities, leading to improved living conditions for their families. Many have been able to build better homes, enhance sanitation, launch new businesses, and acquire new skills that have also translated into better job prospects upon their return to Fiji.

Singh pointed out that the ministry has bolstered monitoring systems to ensure the welfare of Fijian workers abroad. Liaison officers are actively involved in overseeing the conditions of these workers, ensuring adherence to minimum standards and preventing exploitation. This oversight aims to create a safer working environment for Fijians employed overseas.

Furthermore, the ministry remains committed to collaborating with authorities and unions to tackle challenges in labor practices, ensuring that employment laws are respected and workers are shielded from discrimination. The protective measures and support systems in place not only empower Fijian workers but also signify a hopeful outlook for the future of employment in Fiji.
