“IF women stop, the world stops.” This potent message was shared by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) during a concert in Suva to commemorate International Women’s Day. The event aimed to spotlight the often-overlooked unpaid care work that women perform throughout Fiji, as well as the persistent gender inequalities faced by them.

The concert united musicians, activists, and community members to celebrate women’s resilience while emphasizing the need for continued advocacy for women’s rights. FWRM Executive Director Nalini Singh spoke passionately about the importance of International Women’s Day, urging that its focus remain on evaluating advancements in gender equality and the structural barriers that continue to hinder women.

“International Women’s Day is fundamentally about promoting rights and equality,” Singh stated. She highlighted various issues such as gender-based violence, economic disparity, and lack of representation in political spheres, all of which disproportionately affect women. She pushed for accountability from those in power and called for amplifying the voices and leadership of women, particularly from marginalized communities.

Singh expressed concern that the essence of International Women’s Day has been compromised through commercialization. She noted that in various contexts, the day has devolved into a series of corporate hashtags and superficial gestures rather than fostering actual structural change.

Speaking on the key gender challenges in the Pacific, Singh pointed out the alarming rates of gender-based violence, gaps in economic participation, and climate-related issues that predominantly impact women. Efforts to increase women’s leadership roles and provide comprehensive sexuality education remain crucial priorities.

“Ultimately, International Women’s Day serves as both a checkpoint and a catalyst,” Singh concluded, emphasizing that the focus should not be on superficial gifts but on advocating for true freedom and transformation in women’s rights.

The concert and the day’s activities served as a powerful reminder of the essential role women play in society and the urgent need for a collective commitment to gender equality.
