The Fiji Sports Council’s Grassroots Fiji Under-21 7s tournament is set to continue its journey to Nacula in the Yasawa Group, following its recent successful leg on Ovalau. Registration is now open for male and female teams to compete in both rugby and netball events.
Teams can register for the 7s rugby tournament with fees of $350 for male teams and $150 for female and netball teams. The prize pool for the rugby competition is substantial, with the male cup winner receiving $3,500, while the runner-up gets $2,000, and the plate winner earns $1,000. Female teams will compete for a cup prize of $1,500, alongside recognition for the best female player at $100. The netball competition also offers attractive prizes, including $1,000 for the winning team and $500 for the runner-up, alongside a reward for the best player.
This tournament marks the fourth leg of this year’s series, which began in Bua in April, followed by Taveuni and the recent Levuka leg on Ovalau. The tournament aims to engage remote communities and provide a platform for youth athletes to showcase their skills, aligning with the Fiji Sports Council’s mission to foster rugby talent across all regions of Fiji.
Looking ahead, the tournament will proceed to Moala in the Lau Group from July 25-26 and will culminate in Kadavu in August, before concluding in Suva at the start of September. This series not only emphasizes competitive sporting opportunities but also underscores the importance of community spirit and youth development within Fijian culture.
The Grassroots Fiji program has proven its impact on nurturing emerging talent, including those who have represented Fiji in international tournaments, making this tournament an essential undertaking for the future of Fijian rugby. Fans and communities are encouraged to participate and support the upcoming legs of the tournament, celebrating the vibrant talent and dedication of young athletes.
