The upcoming AA Spares Fiji Amateur Championship is generating considerable excitement as it approaches its inaugural round this weekend at Denarau. With the previous champion, Abid Hussein, now a professional golfer, the competition is set to showcase a fresh victor this year.
Among the notable contenders are Shakeell Pillay, who has recently achieved success in other tournaments, Australian golfer Adish Kumar, and Asish Chand, the director of Ba School. The tournament will feature a total of 50 registered players, including five women, highlighting the diverse talent participating.
Importantly, this championship is designated as a world-ranking event. Players who finish at 6 over par or better over 54 holes will receive world rankings. Currently, Adish Kumar is the sole player with an established ranking, although his Australian citizenship unfortunately limits his eligibility for Fijian rankings.
In a commendable effort to engage youth in golf, Golf Fiji is providing complimentary entry to junior players, reinforcing their commitment to nurturing young talent in the sport. Golf Fiji President Amitesh Chandra expressed appreciation for AA Spares’ ongoing support, which has been vital for the sport’s development in Fiji. Chandra remarked, “We are thankful to Salen Naidu and AA Spares for their ongoing commitment to golf, especially for fostering young talent. Their backing ensures that we continue to see growth and opportunity in the sport.”
Set to commence at 7 AM on Saturday, the championship promises a day filled with competitive spirit and remarkable displays of skill. This event not only emphasizes the enthusiasm among the golfing community but also heralds a bright future for the sport in Fiji, particularly through initiatives aimed at cultivating young golfers.
With significant anticipation surrounding the championship, it serves as a celebration of sport, skill, and the competitive spirit within Fiji’s golfing community. As participants vie for glory, the event exemplifies the potential for growth and inspiration in the landscape of Fijian golf.
